Binghamton, NY – A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Leatherstocking region in New York, in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday due to critical fire weather conditions. The National Weather Service in Binghamton warns that low humidity and gusty winds could rapidly spread any fires that ignite.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning covers Fire Weather Zone 210, where winds from the south are expected to range between 14 to 22 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels will drop as low as 22 to 28 percent, creating an environment conducive to fire spread. Temperatures in the area are forecasted to reach between 68 and 74 degrees.
Officials emphasize that a burn ban remains in effect throughout New York State until May 14, and outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Fires that develop in fine fuels, such as dry grass or leaves, could spread quickly under these conditions.
While the eastern portion of the Leatherstocking region may see slightly less hazardous conditions, fire risks remain elevated across the area. Residents are urged to avoid activities that could ignite fires and to report any wildfires to local authorities immediately.
The National Weather Service advises residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions until the warning expires at 8 p.m.
