Albany, NY — Unseasonably warm weather is sweeping across New York this Halloween, with temperatures forecast to surge to near 80 degrees in Albany and surrounding areas. This unseasonal heat, expected to exceed normal October averages by 20 to 25 degrees, has prompted the National Weather Service to advise residents to take precautions while celebrating the holiday outdoors. Breezy southerly winds will accompany the heat, providing a warm, sunny backdrop ideal for trick-or-treating but potentially uncomfortable for those in heavy costumes.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, today’s highs may approach 80 degrees, far above the October 31 average. Albany’s record for Halloween, set at 75 degrees in 2019, could be surpassed today, with other regions like Glens Falls and Poughkeepsie potentially breaking records set in 1942 and 1946, respectively. Such warmth is a rare occurrence for Halloween, making it a unique weather event for those celebrating.
The current five-day forecast suggests temperatures will drop slightly after Halloween. A mild Friday, with highs near 73, will bring a slight chance of morning showers, followed by cloudy conditions as the temperature stabilizes. Saturday will bring sunshine, with a cooler high around 54 degrees, setting the tone for a cooler weekend. Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 54, but evening clouds will begin to roll in. By Monday, temperatures will decrease further, with highs around 52 degrees and a 40% chance of showers as colder, fall-like weather returns to Albany.
This Halloween heatwave provides a last touch of summer for New Yorkers but also calls for hydration and light clothing for comfort. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates as the week progresses and prepare for a sharp return to cooler weather by next week.
