Albany, NY – Travel across parts of eastern New York and northwest Connecticut could become dangerous Friday evening as a strengthening winter storm brings heavy snowfall to the region, prompting a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, the warning remains in effect from 4 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday for Ulster, Greene, and Dutchess counties in New York, along with Litchfield County in Connecticut. Forecasters expect 5 to 8 inches of snow, with the heaviest accumulation occurring Friday night.

Snow is expected to develop around or just after sunset Friday, quickly intensifying into moderate to heavy snowfall during the evening hours. The NWS warns that snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible Friday night, which could rapidly overwhelm road crews and create treacherous driving conditions.

Communities likely to be impacted include Kingston, Poughkeepsie, New Paltz, Beacon, Woodstock, Ellenville, Catskill, Tannersville, Cairo, Torrington, New Milford, and Thomaston. The storm is expected to significantly affect the Friday evening commute, with roads becoming snow-covered in a short period of time.

Officials warn that bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads will be especially hazardous, and travel could become difficult or dangerous overnight. Snow is expected to gradually taper off Saturday morning, though lingering impacts are likely through midday.

Residents who must travel are urged to carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, water, and extra clothing. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time.

Travelers are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and road conditions as the storm progresses.
