New York, N.Y. – A period of freezing rain is expected across interior portions of the region this evening, according to the National Weather Service in New York. Winter Weather Advisories have been expanded as forecasters monitor the potential for slick and hazardous travel conditions.

Temperatures are forecast to hover between 29 and 32 degrees, allowing rain to freeze on contact for several hours before warmer air arrives overnight. Ice accumulation is expected to range from a light glaze up to one-tenth of an inch in advisory areas.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect from 4 PM this afternoon through late tonight or early Monday, including:

  • Orange and Putnam counties (through 2 AM Monday)
  • Portions of interior Connecticut
  • Rockland, northern Westchester, Passaic, and western Bergen counties

Forecasters note that low-level cold air trapped near the surface may prolong freezing rain in some locations, especially across low-lying and far northern interior areas. Even brief icing can result in dangerous travel, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks.

Temperatures are expected to rise late Sunday night, allowing precipitation to change over to plain rain toward or just after midnight. However, impacts from icing may linger into the Monday morning commute in some spots.

Residents are urged to use caution while traveling, monitor updated forecasts, and be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions.
