New York, N.Y. – A developing coastal low is expected to bring the season’s first widespread winter weather to the New York region Tuesday, with accumulating snow across the interior and mostly rain near the coast. The National Weather Service in New York City reports that a Winter Storm Watch is in effect for Orange County, while Winter Weather Advisories cover Putnam, Rockland, and western Passaic Counties from early Tuesday morning through Tuesday night.
Forecasters say 4 to 7 inches of snow are possible in Orange County, with 3 to 5 inches expected across western Passaic, Putnam, and northern Fairfield counties. Farther south, including the Lower Hudson Valley, northern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut, 1 to 3 inches may fall before the snow changes to rain by late morning.
New York City and Long Island are expected to see mostly rain, though a brief early coating of snow could make for slick roads before temperatures rise above freezing. Commuters north of I-287 and west of the Hudson should plan for slower travel and possible snow-covered roads during the Tuesday morning rush.
Snow and mixed precipitation will taper off by Tuesday evening as the system moves east, leaving behind slushy surfaces and cooler air overnight.
Winter Weather Advisories and Watches remain in effect through Tuesday evening for parts of the Lower Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey.
