New York – The skyline looks calm now, but whiteout conditions could swallow it by sunrise Sunday as a blizzard barrels toward the city. A Blizzard Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday for New York City and much of southeast New York.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, 13 to 18 inches of snow are expected across the city. Winds may gust as high as 55 mph. Visibility could drop below a quarter mile at times, especially Sunday night into Monday. Travel may become dangerous and potentially life-threatening.
Central Park reports overcast skies and 36 degrees late this morning. Highs reach the upper 40s today before colder air arrives. Rain develops Sunday morning, then flips to snow by late morning. Snowfall rates may intensify Sunday afternoon. By Sunday night, heavy snow and blowing snow could create near-zero visibility on the FDR Drive, I-278 and the Long Island Expressway.
Snow continues into Monday with an additional 3 to 7 inches possible during the day. Strong winds may down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. Restrict travel to emergencies only. If you must drive, carry a winter survival kit and stay with your vehicle if stranded.
Conditions improve Monday night as winds slowly ease. Sunshine returns Tuesday with highs near the low 30s. Midweek temperatures rebound toward 40 degrees, and longer-range guidance hints at milder air building late next week, offering early spring warmth after this burst of winter vengeance.
