NEW YORK – A sprawling coastal storm is lashing the New York metropolitan area with strong northeast winds today, expected to continue through Monday evening. The National Weather Service in New York has extended its Wind Advisory for New York City, Long Island, northeast New Jersey, and coastal Connecticut until 6 p.m. Monday.
According to the NWS New York office, sustained northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph will persist through Monday afternoon, strongest along the south shore of Long Island and the Rockaways. Coastal neighborhoods from Brooklyn to Montauk and the Long Island Sound shoreline will experience the brunt of the gusts.
Forecasters warn that scattered power outages and tree damage are possible as the gusts peak tonight into early Monday. Bridges such as the Verrazzano-Narrows, Throgs Neck, and Robert Moses Causeway may experience travel restrictions for high-profile vehicles. Commuters should plan for slower travel and potential delays on elevated roadways and rail lines.
Con Edison and PSEG Long Island crews are on standby for scattered outages, and emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor decorations, patio furniture, and trash bins before winds intensify. Mariners are also advised to remain in port as coastal waters experience gale-force gusts and choppy seas.
Winds will gradually ease late Monday evening, giving way to calmer and milder weather by midweek.
