Montauk, NY – A powerful coastal storm is slamming New York’s coastal waters this morning, prompting the National Weather Service in New York City to maintain a Storm Warning for all Long Island and southern New England marine zones through 6 p.m. Monday, October 13.
According to the National Weather Service, northeast winds of 30 to 40 knots, with gusts up to 55 knots, are combining with seas of 15 to 20 feet from Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point. Conditions are only slightly less severe closer to shore, with winds of 25 to 35 knots and waves between 5 and 12 feet across the Long Island Sound, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and south shore bays.
Meteorologists warn that storm-force winds and hazardous seas will make travel extremely dangerous or impossible, likely to capsize or damage vessels and sharply reduce visibility. Mariners are urged to stay in port or secure their vessels until conditions ease late this evening.
The National Weather Service continues to advise against any small craft or recreational boating activity until winds and seas subside.
