New York, NY – Clouds will linger through Saturday morning before skies turn partly sunny across the New York metro, but residents north and west of the city should prepare for scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, rain chances range from 10% along Long Island and coastal New Jersey to as high as 45% in Liberty and 39% in Middletown. The highest risk of downpours and thunder is expected in the Hudson Valley and interior New Jersey late Saturday afternoon.

Temperatures will climb into the mid-to-upper 80s for much of the region, including Newark at 87°, Poughkeepsie at 87°, and New Brunswick at 87°. New York City is forecast to reach 82°, while cooler conditions are expected on Long Island, where Stony Brook and Islip will hover near 80°.

Travelers heading north on I-87 or west along I-80 should use caution if storms develop, as brief heavy rain could reduce visibility and slow traffic. Those in storm-prone areas should secure outdoor items and keep devices charged in case of isolated power outages.

The storm threat diminishes by Saturday night, with drier conditions expected to return heading into Sunday.
