New York, New York – A severe Arctic outbreak is set to bring dangerous, potentially life-threatening cold across New York beginning Friday, with brutal wind chills, powerful gusts, and periods of blowing snow impacting the state through the weekend and into early next week.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts could exceed 50 mph at times, driving wind chills down to 20 to 30 below zero across much of upstate New York. In the North Country and higher elevations of the Adirondacks and Catskills, wind chills could plunge even further, approaching 40 below zero during the coldest periods. Even in New York City and Long Island, subzero wind chills are expected overnight and during the early morning hours.

The Arctic air is being reinforced by extensive ice coverage on Lake Erie, now close to fully frozen, helping lock the cold in place across western and central New York. Snow showers and squalls are possible statewide, with brief bursts of snow and blowing winds capable of rapidly reducing visibility on highways, bridges, and exposed roadways. While widespread heavy snow is not guaranteed, localized accumulations and drifting snow could create dangerous travel conditions, especially north and west of the city.

The extreme cold poses serious risks to health and infrastructure. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin in minutes. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin. Wrap exposed pipes, open cabinet doors, and allow faucets to drip to prevent frozen plumbing. Strong winds may also lead to scattered power outages, making it important to charge devices and prepare for possible heat disruptions.

The coldest conditions are expected from Friday night through the weekend, with only slow improvement possible early next week. Additional advisories or warnings may be issued as the situation evolves, and officials stress taking this Arctic outbreak seriously.
