New York, NY – A coastal flood advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday for parts of New York City and northeastern New Jersey, where high tides may bring minor flooding to low-lying shoreline areas.

According to the National Weather Service, water levels are expected to rise 1 to 2 feet above ground in vulnerable spots near New York Harbor, Kill Van Kull, Newark Bay, and Great Kills Harbor. Streets, parking lots, parks, and properties with basements close to the waterfront could experience shallow inundation.

Minor flooding is most likely in Staten Island, lower Manhattan, eastern Union County, and parts of Hudson and Essex counties in New Jersey. High tide readings show the greatest risk occurring between 8 and 10 p.m. Friday, with some spots briefly exceeding normal levels by 2 to 3 feet.

Drivers are urged to avoid flood-prone roads, especially during the evening commute, as standing water may be deeper than it appears. Residents in affected areas should move vehicles to higher ground and prepare for temporary road closures.

Conditions improve after midnight, but the National Weather Service warns that additional coastal flooding threats are possible with upcoming high tides through the weekend.
