New York City, New York – A fast-moving cold front will bring periods of light precipitation to New York City today into early Thursday, with rain expected to briefly mix with snow overnight as temperatures drop toward freezing, raising concerns for slick travel during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, light rain will develop through the day Wednesday, with total rainfall amounts around one-tenth of an inch or less across the city. As colder air pushes in late tonight, precipitation may transition to a rain-snow mix or brief snow before ending Thursday morning. Snow accumulation in the city is expected to remain minimal, generally under a tenth of an inch.

Across downstate New York, including parts of the Lower Hudson Valley and interior southwest Connecticut, slightly higher chances for snow are expected overnight, though accumulations remain limited. Surface temperatures in New York City are forecast to hover in the mid-30s overnight, while areas north and west dip closer to freezing, increasing the risk for icy patches on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.

Precipitation chances increase after midnight, with the highest likelihood of wintry mix between roughly 3 a.m. and 9 a.m. Thursday. By midday Thursday, conditions improve as precipitation exits east, though colder air will remain in place.

City agencies are monitoring road conditions, and commuters are urged to allow extra travel time Thursday morning and use caution on elevated roadways. While widespread impacts are not expected, even light snow or ice can create localized hazards during peak travel hours.

The cold front marks a transition to a colder pattern to close out the week. Additional updates may be issued overnight if precipitation timing or temperatures shift, especially for early-morning travel across the metro area.
