New York, NY – Swimmers and beachgoers across New York City and Long Island are being warned to stay cautious as a High Surf Advisory remains in effect Wednesday through Thursday, bringing a heightened risk of dangerous rip currents along the Atlantic shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, surf conditions will remain rough through at least Thursday evening, with the strongest waves expected along southern Queens, Brooklyn, and the oceanfront communities of Suffolk and Nassau counties. Lifeguards are urging beach visitors to stay near designated swim areas and avoid venturing into unguarded waters.
The advisory includes popular spots such as Rockaway Beach, Jones Beach, and Montauk, where large breaking waves could make swimming and even standing near the surf zone hazardous. Local officials recommend avoiding swimming altogether during peak surf hours and advise surfers and boaters to exercise extreme caution.
Travelers along coastal roadways may also encounter splash-over and minor flooding during high tide cycles, particularly in low-lying areas of southern Long Island. Emergency management officials stress that rip currents can easily overpower even strong swimmers, making rescue operations dangerous.
The high surf threat is expected to gradually ease by late Thursday, though forecasters caution additional advisories could be issued if ocean conditions remain elevated.
