New York, NY – Heavy rain could drench Manhattan Monday afternoon, raising the risk of flash flooding across busy streets, subways, and low-lying neighborhoods through midnight. Commuters and residents should expect waterlogged intersections, rapid stream rises, and possible road closures during the evening rush.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch is in effect for Manhattan from 2 p.m. through midnight as slow-moving thunderstorms could dump 2 or more inches of rain per hour in some spots. Most of the city is likely to see 0.5 to 1.5 inches, but local totals could reach 3 inches if storms repeatedly track over the same areas.

City officials urge New Yorkers to avoid underpasses, basements, and areas with poor drainage. Major roads including the FDR Drive and West Side Highway are especially vulnerable during high rainfall rates. Subway service may be disrupted if water pools at station entrances. Residents should charge devices, check sump pumps, and keep emergency supplies handy in case power or transit is impacted.

This flood watch follows several weeks of scattered showers but marks the heaviest rain event for Manhattan so far this July. Similar events last summer stranded drivers and flooded parts of Lower Manhattan.

Warnings may be issued with little notice if flooding develops, and the Flood Watch remains active through midnight. Stay alert for rapid weather updates and new alerts from city officials.
