New York, NY – Brutally cold air is sweeping into the Northeast Friday night, sending wind chills plummeting below zero across New York City, Long Island, and into Connecticut. Commuters and overnight travelers could face life-threatening cold through early Saturday, with frostbite possible in as little as 15 minutes.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, wind chills between -3°F and -11°F are expected from 7 p.m. Friday through 9 a.m. Saturday. Liberty, New Jersey could feel as cold as -17°F, while Hartford and Waterbury, Connecticut will see values near -11°F. In New York City, “feels-like” temperatures will hover around -6°F before sunrise.

Daytime highs Saturday won’t offer much relief, barely climbing into the upper teens across the metro area. Montauk, White Plains, and Newark may only hit 18°F, with even lower readings inland. The arctic air mass brings elevated risks of hypothermia and frozen pipes.

Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and let faucets drip overnight to prevent freezing. Pets should be brought inside, and vulnerable neighbors checked on. Emergency warming centers may open if conditions worsen.

Dangerous cold will persist into Saturday evening, with another wind chill advisory possible. Updates are expected as the weekend storm threat develops.
