New York, NY – A brutal combination of extreme heat and scattered thunderstorms is expected to grip the Tri-State region Friday, with heat index values soaring between 100°F and 105°F and severe storms likely by late afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for northeast New Jersey from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with Heat Advisories extending across New York City, Long Island, and southwestern Connecticut. Officials warn that the elevated heat index could trigger heat-related illness in vulnerable populations and those without access to air conditioning or hydration.
Friday’s peak heat is expected late morning through early evening. Damaging wind gusts of 58 mph or higher could accompany afternoon and evening thunderstorms, particularly north and west of NYC. Minor flooding is possible in poor drainage areas.
Outdoor activity should be limited. Residents are urged to check on the elderly, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. Beaches also carry a moderate to high risk of rip currents.
Heat and storm risks may continue into Saturday. The National Weather Service advises monitoring updates by 6 a.m. Thursday for any escalated warnings or changes.
