New York, NY – A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for New York City and surrounding areas, effective until 11 p.m. tonight. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns of the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the NWS, isolated thunderstorms are forming over eastern Pennsylvania and will move into the New York City area by mid-afternoon. A larger cluster of storms from western Pennsylvania is expected to arrive by evening, bringing significant weather threats. Primary concerns include wind gusts up to 75 mph, hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and the possibility of tornadoes.

The severe thunderstorm watch covers regions approximately 60 miles north and south of a line from 40 miles west of Allentown, PA, to 20 miles east-northeast of New York City. Residents are urged to stay indoors, secure loose items outdoors, and monitor weather updates for the latest information.
