New York, New York – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for New York City and surrounding areas from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon, with accumulating snow expected to impact travel across the region, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch covers New York City, Long Island, portions of the Lower Hudson Valley, northeast New Jersey, and southern Connecticut, including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, Nassau and Suffolk counties, and parts of Westchester, Rockland, Bergen, Essex, and Fairfield counties.

According to the National Weather Service office in New York, snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches are possible across the watch area. Snow is expected to develop Friday afternoon and continue into Saturday, with the potential for periods of steady snowfall.

Forecasters warn that road conditions may deteriorate Friday evening, when snowfall could coincide with the evening commute. Slippery roads, reduced visibility, and slower travel are possible on major highways, bridges, and untreated surfaces throughout the metropolitan area.

While confidence is increasing that a plowable snowfall will occur, the National Weather Service emphasized that the exact track and intensity of the system remain uncertain. Small shifts in the storm’s path could result in locally higher or lower snowfall totals.

Residents and travelers are urged to monitor updated forecasts and prepare for winter driving conditions. Those planning travel Friday night or early Saturday should allow extra time and use caution, especially in urban corridors where traffic congestion could worsen under snowy conditions.

A Winter Storm Watch means conditions are favorable for significant winter weather but are not yet guaranteed. Additional updates, including the potential for winter storm warnings or advisories, are expected as the system approaches.
