New York City, New York – A bitterly cold air mass combined with strong winds is expected to bring dangerously low wind chills to the New York City metro area and surrounding states this weekend, prompting increased concern for outdoor exposure and travel safety.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, wind chills will drop well below zero Friday night through Sunday night, with the coldest conditions occurring during the overnight and early morning hours. Forecast maps indicate wind chill values as low as -15 to -20 degrees across parts of northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, Long Island, and southern Connecticut.

The coldest apparent temperatures are expected late Saturday night into early Sunday, when winds strengthen and temperatures fall further. Additional rounds of subzero wind chills are likely again Sunday night into early Monday.

Major travel corridors including Interstate 95, Interstate 287, Interstate 78, Interstate 295, and Interstate 495 may be impacted as drivers face extreme cold during overnight travel. While no precipitation is expected, the combination of wind and cold increases the risk of vehicle issues such as battery failure and reduced tire pressure.

The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and ensure hats and gloves are worn when outside.

Those relying on public transportation or walking near roadways should be prepared for prolonged exposure to extreme cold, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours. Officials also urge motorists to keep emergency supplies in vehicles, including blankets, water, and fully charged phones.

The prolonged cold may be especially impactful for students, weekend workers, and commuters traveling along I-95 and other major routes during overnight hours.

This forecast is based on guidance issued early Wednesday and will be updated if wind chill advisories or warnings are issued.
