New York City, New York – Another frigid night is expected across the New York City region, with dangerously cold wind chills prompting a Cold Weather Advisory for much of the area overnight into Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, the advisory is in effect from 1 AM to 10 AM Thursday, as wind chill values fall below zero across many locations. The coldest areas are expected to experience “feels-like” temperatures of -5 degrees or colder, especially during the pre-dawn hours.
Wind chill maps released Wednesday show widespread single-digit and sub-zero apparent temperatures across the metro area, including portions of Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley. Areas near major travel corridors such as Interstate 95, I-87, I-278, and I-495 may see the most exposure during overnight and early-morning travel.
The National Weather Service warns that frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes under these conditions, particularly on exposed skin. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover hands and faces, and limit time outdoors when possible.
Commuters heading out early Thursday should be prepared for extreme cold at bus stops, train platforms, and parking areas. While no precipitation is expected, the cold alone presents a safety concern for pedestrians, motorists, and those without adequate shelter.
Officials also stress the importance of checking on vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those without reliable heating. Pets should be brought indoors, and exposed pipes should be protected to prevent freezing.
The Cold Weather Advisory is expected to expire later Thursday morning as temperatures slowly recover, though conditions will remain seasonably cold.
Residents are encouraged to monitor official updates from the National Weather Service and local authorities for any changes.
