New York City, New York – A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect across the New York City region as heavy snowfall is expected through Saturday, with rapid accumulation likely during the evening and overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service office in New York, the warning has been expanded to include southeastern Connecticut, as confidence increases in widespread significant snowfall. The heaviest snow is forecast to fall between 6 p.m. and midnight, moving west to east across the region, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour possible.
Forecast totals show 8 to 10 inches of snow across much of the New York City metro area, including Newark, White Plains, Islip, and Westhampton. Portions of western and central Connecticut, including Danbury, New Haven, and Waterbury, are also expected to receive 8 to 10 inches, with localized amounts potentially higher inland. Eastern Connecticut locations such as Norwich and New London may see slightly lower totals, generally 6 to 8 inches.
The warning remains in effect from late Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, with snow continuing into early Saturday before tapering off.
Officials warn that the combination of heavy snowfall and high rates could lead to hazardous travel conditions, especially during the evening commute and overnight hours. Untreated roads, bridges, and sidewalks are expected to become snow-covered quickly.
Commuters and overnight travelers are urged to allow extra time and use caution as conditions deteriorate.
