New York, NY – Blistering summer heat is tightening its grip on the Tri-State area, sending heat index values soaring as high as 103° in New York City, Long Island, and northern New Jersey through 10 p.m. Thursday. Residents are urged to limit outdoor activity and seek out air conditioning, as dangerous conditions threaten both public safety and daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for the five boroughs, Hudson and Bergen counties, as well as much of Fairfield and New Haven counties in Connecticut. The advisory warns that oppressive humidity will make temperatures feel close to or above 100°, particularly from mid-afternoon until sunset on Thursday.

Local impacts will be widespread. In Manhattan and Brooklyn, city cooling centers are open and officials are urging residents to call 311 for locations and tips. Nassau and Suffolk counties are seeing similar conditions, with the heat expected to linger into Thursday night. Connecticut towns from Stamford to New London may experience increased risk for heat-related illnesses, especially in homes lacking air conditioning.

Seniors, children, and those with health conditions are at greatest risk. Officials urge everyone to check on vulnerable neighbors, use air-conditioned spaces, and avoid strenuous outdoor work. OSHA recommends frequent breaks in the shade and staying hydrated. Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cool location and 911 should be called immediately.

The heat will persist into Thursday night, with relief expected late week. Further advisories may be issued if conditions persist.
