New York, NY – New Yorkers are waking up to oppressive heat and humidity, with a dangerous heat index peaking near 102 degrees across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island until 8 p.m. tonight. City officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and tropical-level humidity could spark heat-related illnesses—especially for seniors and those without air conditioning.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for all five boroughs, as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and Rockland Counties, plus large portions of Connecticut and North Jersey. The advisory covers millions from Stamford and Bridgeport to Yonkers, Hempstead, and the Jersey suburbs, with the heat index expected to hover between 97 and 102 through the evening rush.
Cooling centers across New York City are open, and residents can dial 311 to find the nearest location or to get “Beat the Heat” safety tips. Health officials urge everyone to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, drink water frequently, and check in on vulnerable neighbors. If your home lacks air conditioning, spend time in air-conditioned spaces such as malls, libraries, or community centers.
Outdoor workers should schedule frequent breaks in the shade or indoors. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—call 911 if symptoms develop. This July heat wave echoes the 2021 event, when similar advisories lasted multiple days and led to hundreds of emergency calls citywide.
The Heat Advisory is in effect until 8 p.m., but overnight temperatures may offer only slight relief. Additional warnings may follow if the heat persists through Thursday.
