New York, NY – Dangerous heat and humidity are surging into the Tri-State area today, putting millions at risk for heat-related illnesses as the heat index climbs to 100 degrees or higher through 10 p.m. Thursday. Cooling centers are open across New York City, with city officials urging residents to check on vulnerable neighbors and stay indoors if possible.

According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for New York City, Northeast New Jersey, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and most of southern Connecticut from 11 a.m. Wednesday until 10 p.m. Thursday. The advisory covers Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Passaic, Bergen, and more.

Residents in New York City should call 311 for the latest information on cooling centers and safety tips. In Connecticut and New Jersey, local agencies recommend staying in air-conditioned spaces, limiting outdoor activity, and checking on seniors or those with chronic health conditions. Outdoor workers are advised to take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

Several Metro-North, NJ Transit, and LIRR lines may see weather-related delays as crews monitor rail conditions. Schools running summer programs in the Bronx, Stamford, Hackensack, and White Plains may move activities indoors.

The heat is expected to ease by Friday morning, but officials warn the advisory could extend if conditions persist.
