New York, NY – Unrelenting heat and humidity are set to grip New York City and neighboring North Jersey counties Tuesday, with heat index values soaring to 100 degrees by late morning and lasting into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service, a Heat Advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for all five boroughs of NYC—including Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island—along with Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic, and Union counties in New Jersey, plus Nassau and Westchester in New York State.
City officials urge residents to seek air conditioning, use designated cooling centers, and check on neighbors, seniors, and those with chronic conditions. The city’s “Beat the Heat” program can be accessed by dialing 3-1-1 for locations and safety tips. The combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity may trigger heat-related illnesses, especially for those without access to cool indoor spaces.
Travelers should plan for slower commutes as subway cars and buses may be warmer than usual. Outdoor workers are advised to schedule frequent shaded breaks, stay hydrated, and be alert for signs of heat exhaustion or stroke—call 911 immediately for any heat emergencies.
This advisory marks the season’s first major heat event, reminiscent of last July’s multi-day heat wave. Conditions may persist through Tuesday night, and further advisories could follow if oppressive weather continues.
