New York, NY – Heavy rain threatens to overwhelm drainage systems across the Tri-State region starting Thursday afternoon, with a Flood Watch in effect through 2 p.m. Friday. Officials warn some areas could see up to 5 inches of rain in under 24 hours.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the Flood Watch spans from Northern and Southern Fairfield County in Connecticut to New York City boroughs and several counties in northeast New Jersey, including Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic. Widespread rainfall totals of 1.5 to 3 inches are expected, but localized downpours could exceed 2 inches per hour, especially Thursday night.

In Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx, low-lying roadways and subway underpasses may become impassable. Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island are also at risk, with rainfall amounts up to 3 inches possible.

Urban flooding is most likely during evening commutes and overnight hours. Residents are urged to clear storm drains, avoid travel through flooded streets, and have mobile devices charged in case of power outages. Areas near rivers or with poor drainage should prepare for flash flooding.

This is the region’s most significant summer rain threat so far. Additional alerts may be issued as the system develops.
