New York, NY – Mild conditions in New York City Tuesday won’t last long, as a stretch of dangerous heat and humidity is expected to move in by Thursday, with heat index values possibly hitting 105°F in parts of the metro area by Friday.
According to the National Weather Service, a 20% chance of light showers remains through midday Tuesday, followed by mostly sunny skies and a high near 77°F. But the real concern starts late week, when temperatures soar and humidity spikes across the five boroughs and surrounding areas. From Thursday through Saturday, the heat index is expected to climb above 95°F daily, peaking Friday when it could top 105°F in urban heat pockets.
Although no hazardous weather alerts have been issued yet, the NWS advises residents to prepare now for heat-related impacts. High temperatures, paired with little overnight cooling, can quickly lead to heat exhaustion—especially for vulnerable groups in areas like the South Bronx, Upper Manhattan, and parts of Queens.
Weekend storm chances also increase, with a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms by Saturday afternoon. That could bring brief relief but may also disrupt travel and outdoor events.
Spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, but conditions could warrant advisories as the week progresses.
