New York, New York – Winter Weather Advisories are now in effect across the entire New York City region as a mix of snow and freezing rain creates hazardous travel conditions Sunday morning, according to the National Weather Service New York.
In a 6:30 AM radar update posted by the National Weather Service, forecasters said snow and pockets of freezing rain pushed into the area earlier than expected from the southwest. As a result, slippery road conditions are being reported across the region.
The National Weather Service warned that black ice may form in locations where precipitation is light or not actively falling, increasing the danger for motorists and pedestrians. Even untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses may quickly become slick during the morning hours.
Radar imagery shared by the agency shows a band of mixed precipitation stretching across the region, impacting travel during the early morning commute. Officials emphasized that conditions may remain hazardous through the morning as precipitation continues to move through.
Residents are urged to use caution when traveling, allow extra time to reach destinations, and remain alert for rapidly changing road conditions. Drivers should reduce speeds and be especially careful on elevated roadways.
The National Weather Service encourages the public to continue monitoring official updates for the latest information as conditions evolve.
