New York, NY — An air quality alert has been issued for New York City, Rockland, and Westchester, in effect until 11 p.m. tonight. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) issued the alert due to elevated particulate matter in the air, attributed to smoke from wildfires in northern New Jersey.
According to AirNow.gov, the current Air Quality Index (AQI) in New York City is 136, categorized as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” The primary pollutant is PM2.5, which can pose health risks, especially to children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues.
Officials advise limiting strenuous outdoor activities until the alert expires. Sensitive individuals should stay indoors, avoid intense physical activity, and keep windows closed. Air quality is expected to improve slightly by tomorrow, though moderate levels of PM2.5 pollution may persist.
