New York, N.Y. – Residents across New York City and surrounding counties should limit strenuous outdoor activity through midnight Thursday as air quality levels spike due to fine particulate pollution.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, an Air Quality Health Advisory is in effect for New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, and Rockland counties. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to rise above 100, signaling unhealthy levels for sensitive groups.
The advisory highlights fine particulates — tiny pollution particles that can aggravate breathing conditions and increase the risk of respiratory issues. Those with asthma, heart disease, or other preexisting conditions are especially at risk, as are children and older adults. The New York State Department of Health urges residents to avoid prolonged outdoor exertion, especially during peak afternoon hours.
Urban centers like Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as suburban areas across Long Island and Westchester, are expected to be most affected. Residents are encouraged to monitor symptoms and consult physicians if breathing issues arise.
The advisory remains in effect until midnight Thursday. For updates, residents can call the state’s toll-free air quality hotline at 1-800-535-1345.
