Rochester, NY – A Monroe County investigation has uncovered a disturbing case of cemetery desecration after a Lyons man was arrested for allegedly stealing 79 bronze vases from a Pittsford cemetery and selling them for scrap metal.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to White Haven Memorial Park on October 16, 2025, after staff reported a man removing bronze vases from mausoleums. Employees provided deputies with detailed descriptions of the suspect’s vehicle and clothing before he fled the scene.

Soon after, a nearby metal recycling business — Premier Metal in East Rochester — contacted authorities to report a man attempting to exchange several bronze vases for cash. Deputies and East Rochester police responded, detaining the suspect, identified as Christopher M. Stefano, 42, of Lyons.

Officials say the recovered items, including one brass handle, were valued at $11,455. During the arrest, Stefano was also allegedly found with illegal drugs. He now faces multiple charges, including grand larceny, cemetery desecration, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Stefano remains held in the Monroe County Jail without bail due to his predicate felony status.
