New York, NY – As Post-Tropical Depression Debby advances, New York faces a potentially dangerous weather situation. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and isolated severe thunderstorms beginning Friday afternoon and lasting into early Saturday. Flash flooding, particularly in urban and poor drainage areas, is a significant concern.

According to the NWS, rainfall totals are expected to range from 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, especially in northwestern New York and New York City. Winds are forecasted to blow from the south at 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, potentially reaching 50 mph in the Long Island and New York City areas Friday evening.

The NWS also warns of isolated tornadoes and power outages due to downed trees and limbs. The high-risk surf and dangerous rip currents along ocean beaches will persist into Saturday, with waves reaching up to 12 feet.

Following Debby’s impact, New York will experience a break in severe weather. Saturday is expected to be sunny with temperatures reaching 86°F. The calmer trend continues into the weekend, with sunny skies and highs in the low 80s on Sunday and Monday. Cooler temperatures will return mid-week, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
