Long Island, N.Y. – Heavy, wet snow is intensifying across Long Island tonight as a powerful bomb cyclone tracks up the East Coast, prompting blizzard warnings and strong advisories for residents to avoid travel and protect their health. Snow will become heavier overnight and peak Monday, creating whiteout conditions and dangerous roadways from Nassau and Suffolk counties into New York City.
According to NOAA and the National Weather Service, blizzard warnings stretch across Long Island, including Hempstead, Islip and Montauk, and extend into the five boroughs. Widespread winter storm warnings cover much of the state as the system moves north. Some areas in the broader coastal region could approach 30 inches of snowfall, with the heaviest bands targeting eastern sections before shifting into New England later Monday.
This storm is producing dense, moisture-laden snow that weighs significantly more than typical winter powder. That added weight increases the risk of downed tree limbs and power lines across Suffolk County and coastal communities. It also makes shoveling especially hazardous. Health officials urge residents to take frequent breaks, avoid lifting heavy loads and push snow whenever possible. Overexertion during snow removal can strain the heart, particularly for older adults and those with underlying medical conditions.
Travel is strongly discouraged except for emergencies. Roads including the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway may become impassable during peak snowfall. If drivers become stranded, the National Weather Service advises staying inside the vehicle with a winter emergency kit rather than attempting to walk in blizzard conditions.
Heavy snow and strong winds will gradually ease late Monday into Tuesday, though gusty conditions may linger. Additional advisories remain possible as the storm pulls away.
