Albany, NY – A significant ice storm is hitting parts of upstate New York and southern Vermont, with dangerous conditions expected to last through 11 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect for Hamilton, Northern Warren, and Northern Washington counties in New York, as well as Bennington and Western Windham counties in Vermont. The heaviest icing is expected above 1,500 feet in elevation, where up to half an inch of ice may accumulate.

Forecasters say the storm began Saturday afternoon and will continue into Sunday morning, creating treacherous travel conditions and the potential for widespread, long-duration power outages. Ice buildup on tree limbs and power lines could lead to falling debris and dangerous road hazards.

Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel, especially in elevated areas, and to prepare for extended outages. The National Weather Service recommends keeping flashlights, food, and water in vehicles and homes in case of emergencies.

Power companies across the affected counties are on alert for damage and are advising customers to report outages and avoid downed lines. Slippery sidewalks and bridges pose risks for pedestrians and drivers alike.
