Syracuse, N.Y. – A statewide air quality alert is in effect through 11:59 p.m. Monday as fine particulate levels rise across Central and Southern New York, raising health concerns for residents in cities like Binghamton, Syracuse, and Utica.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, air quality index (AQI) values are expected to exceed 100, signaling elevated levels of fine particulate matter. The advisory affects much of the region, including Oneida, Broome, Otsego, Chemung, and Tompkins counties.

Residents — especially children, older adults, and those with asthma or heart disease — are urged to limit strenuous outdoor activity. The New York State Department of Health recommends staying indoors, running air purifiers, and avoiding high-exertion tasks such as yardwork or jogging.

Outdoor workers and vulnerable groups should monitor symptoms like coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath and consult a physician if conditions worsen. This is the second air quality alert for the region this month, driven by stagnant weather and regional smoke contributions.

The advisory remains active through Monday night, with potential updates depending on Tuesday’s pollution levels.
