Monticello, N.Y. – Outdoor air quality across Sullivan, Ulster, and Dutchess counties will reach unhealthy levels today, with a statewide ozone advisory in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Residents, especially those in Monticello, Kingston, and Poughkeepsie, are urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activity as ground-level ozone levels rise.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Air Quality Index (AQI) is expected to exceed 100 for ozone—posing health risks to sensitive groups including children, seniors, and anyone with asthma or heart conditions. The advisory spans from Monticello and Ellenville to Beacon, Millbrook, and Amenia.
Health officials recommend staying indoors during peak hours, using air conditioning if available, and postponing vigorous exercise. Schools, outdoor camps, and youth sports programs in the region may consider moving activities indoors. Those experiencing breathing issues should contact their doctor.
Drivers are also encouraged to limit vehicle use to help reduce further emissions today. This is the second ozone alert for the Hudson Valley this July—a sign of lingering high summer heat and stagnant air.
The ozone advisory remains in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, with additional alerts possible if weather conditions persist. For live air quality updates, visit the New York State DEC website or call the Air Quality Hotline at 800-535-1345.
