New York, NY – Dangerous air quality levels will blanket much of New York City and the surrounding region through 11 p.m. Monday, prompting health officials to warn residents—especially those with respiratory issues—to limit outdoor activity.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, an Air Quality Health Advisory is in effect due to elevated levels of ground-level ozone. The alert spans all five boroughs—Bronx, Brooklyn (Kings), Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island—as well as Westchester and Rockland counties.

Air Quality Index (AQI) values are expected to surpass 100, signaling unhealthy conditions for sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and people with asthma or heart disease. Health officials recommend avoiding strenuous activity outdoors and using air conditioning to stay cool and protected indoors.

This alert coincides with an ongoing Extreme Heat Warning, further intensifying risks for those without access to cooling centers or home air conditioning. Residents experiencing symptoms like shortness of breath should consult a physician.

The state has set up a toll-free air quality hotline for updates: 1-800-535-1345.

Warnings remain in effect until 11 p.m. Monday, with additional alerts possible if pollution levels persist into Tuesday.
