Buffalo, N.Y. – Residents across Western and Central New York are being urged to limit outdoor activity Monday as unhealthy air quality grips the region through midnight.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, an Air Quality Health Advisory is in effect for fine particulate matter, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeding 100 in several counties. This level poses health concerns, particularly for young children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions.
Cities including Buffalo, Rochester, Niagara Falls, and Watertown are all under the advisory, along with counties from Erie and Monroe to Oswego and Allegany. Outdoor workers, athletes, and vulnerable populations are advised to reduce strenuous activity and monitor symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or fatigue. Health officials recommend seeking medical guidance if symptoms worsen.
Smoke from regional wildfires or stagnant air conditions may be contributing to today’s elevated levels. The state’s Department of Health urges caution, even for healthy individuals, when AQI readings cross 100.
The alert remains in effect until 12 a.m. Tuesday. For real-time updates, visit on.ny.gov/nyaqi or call 1-800-535-1345.
