Albany, New York – Air quality levels have climbed above an AQI of 100 across eastern New York, prompting health officials to urge residents to limit outdoor activity through midnight.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in Albany, an Air Quality Health Advisory for fine particulates remains in effect until 12 a.m. Thursday for much of the Capital Region, upper Hudson Valley, Schoharie Valley and parts of the eastern Catskills. The alert covers Albany, Schenectady, Troy, Saratoga Springs, Gloversville, Amsterdam, Hudson, Catskill and surrounding communities.

An AQI above 100 signals air quality that may pose health concerns, particularly for sensitive groups. Children, older adults and people with asthma, heart disease or other respiratory conditions face a higher risk of symptoms when particulate levels rise.

Health officials recommend limiting strenuous outdoor exercise, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. Residents experiencing coughing, shortness of breath or chest discomfort should contact a healthcare provider.

The advisory remains in effect until midnight, and additional alerts could be issued if pollutant levels remain elevated. Residents can monitor real-time conditions at on.ny.gov/nyaqi or by calling the state’s Air Quality Hotline at 800-535-1345.
