Fort Wayne, IN – Drought conditions across Indiana and Ohio worsened this week, with parts of both states now under Severe Drought status, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor update released Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, the updated drought map shows a significant expansion of D1 Moderate Drought across the region. Portions of eastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio have also been upgraded to D2 Severe Drought, indicating worsening dryness and stress on crops, lawns, and water resources.

Rainfall over the past week has been limited, with most areas receiving only a half inch or less. Western White County was the exception, where 1 to 3 inches of rain fell, offering some localized improvement. However, officials caution that overall conditions continue to deteriorate.

Meteorologists say a pattern shift could bring better rain chances next week, though no major improvement is expected immediately. Farmers, homeowners, and communities are encouraged to monitor updates closely as the dry spell continues into late September.

The next U.S. Drought Monitor update is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, and will provide more details on whether upcoming rain will ease conditions or if the drought will further expand.
