New Orleans, Louisiana – Dangerously high temperatures and humidity will grip southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi on Wednesday, pushing heat index values as high as 111 degrees and triggering a rare Extreme Heat Warning across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, the warning covers nearly every major city and parish from Baton Rouge and Covington to Gulfport and Biloxi, lasting from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Agencies urge all residents to limit time outdoors, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors and pets as heat illnesses can develop rapidly in these conditions.

Major roads including I-10, I-12, and US-61 could see slower commutes as heatwaves ripple across Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Slidell, and Houma. Public cooling centers are being prepared in several parishes. The East Baton Rouge Parish School System has canceled all outdoor sports and summer activities. Utilities across the area are asking residents to conserve electricity as power usage spikes.

Stay indoors with air conditioning if possible, drink extra water, and never leave children or pets in vehicles—car interiors can reach deadly temperatures in minutes. Those working outdoors should take frequent breaks and use shade or cooling towels.

The Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday. More advisories may follow if conditions persist. Check local alerts for updates and additional safety resources.
