New Orleans, Louisiana – A rare February freeze is set to grip southeast Louisiana overnight, putting crops, tender plants, and outdoor pets at risk as temperatures fall below freezing by early Monday morning. Lows are expected to dip to around 27 degrees in several parishes, including the New Orleans metro area and coastal communities.
According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. Monday for much of southeast Louisiana. Parishes under the warning include Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Lafourche, Terrebonne, St. Charles, St. John the Baptist, St. James, and Assumption.
In New Orleans, Metairie, Kenner, Marrero, Gretna, and Chalmette, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing for several hours before sunrise. Farther south, communities such as Houma, Thibodaux, Galliano, Cut Off, Grand Isle, and Cocodrie could also see frost and freeze conditions capable of damaging unprotected vegetation. Agricultural interests across the bayou parishes face a heightened risk of crop damage.
Residents are urged to bring pets indoors, protect sensitive plants, and use space heaters safely. Checking on older neighbors and family members is strongly encouraged. Freeze conditions are expected to ease after sunrise Monday, though lingering cold could prompt additional advisories if temperatures remain slow to recover.
