Santa Fe, New Mexico – Multiple Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across northern and central New Mexico, with snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions expected through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, snowfall totals of 1 to 4 inches are expected across many lower elevations, with isolated amounts of 4 to 8 inches above 8,000 feet. In the South Central Mountains, snowfall will be more significant, with 6 to 12 inches above 8,000 feet and 12 to 18 inches near Sierra Blanca Peak and areas above 10,000 feet.

Wind gusts will range from 35 to 45 miles per hour, contributing to blowing snow, reduced visibility, and difficult travel conditions. Snow levels will initially range between 6,000 and 7,000 feet Thursday morning before lowering to all elevations later in the day.

Advisories remain in effect through Friday morning to Friday evening, depending on location. Affected areas include the Santa Fe Metro, Glorieta Pass, East Slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Harding County, the Northeast Highlands, the West Central Plateau, and the South Central Mountains.

Travel impacts include snow-packed and icy roads, especially along Interstate 25 and Interstate 40, with reduced traction during both Thursday and Friday commute periods. Gusty winds may also down tree limbs in higher terrain.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before traveling by calling 511 or visiting nmroads.com.
