Albuquerque, New Mexico – Snowfall is continuing to affect travel across much of northern and central New Mexico on Friday, Jan. 9, as multiple Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect from the overnight hours through late morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, advisories remain active until 11 a.m. MST Friday, Jan. 9, for the Northwest Highlands, Central Highlands, Upper Rio Grande Valley, Glorieta Mesa, and the Santa Fe metro area, where 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected. Snow-packed and icy roads are likely, including along Interstate 40 and Interstate 25, with impacts to the Friday morning commute, Jan. 9.

Additional advisories continue until 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, for the Northwest Plateau, West Central Plateau, and South Central Mountains, where snowfall totals may reach up to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts near Sierra Blanca Peak west of Ruidoso.

In northeastern New Mexico, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, for the East Slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Northeast Highlands. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected at lower elevations, increasing to 6 to 10 inches above 8,500 feet, accompanied by winds gusting up to 40 mph. Travel along Interstate 25 could become very difficult at times.

The National Weather Service warns that tire traction will be reduced across affected areas and that blowing snow may further limit visibility in higher terrain. Residents and travelers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations.
