Raton, NM – A winter storm watch remains in effect across northern New Mexico, with snowfall totals of up to 12 inches expected in higher elevations by Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the alert covers the Chuska Mountains, Jemez Mountains, and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, including Raton Pass and Johnson and Bartlett Mesas. The advisory begins Friday evening and continues through Saturday evening.

Forecasters say snowfall will range from 3 to 9 inches for most areas, with isolated totals near 12 inches possible above 9,000 feet. The heaviest snow is expected late Friday into Saturday morning, likely impacting the Friday evening commute and weekend travel plans.

Drivers crossing mountain passes such as Raton Pass should prepare for hazardous conditions and consider carrying tire chains. Reduced visibility and slick roads may lead to significant travel delays throughout the region.

Residents in Chama, Taos, and Santa Fe should remain alert to changing conditions. This storm could bring the most substantial late-season snowfall the area has seen in recent weeks.

Travelers and residents are urged to monitor forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall. Stay updated through local news outlets and official National Weather Service bulletins.
