Albuquerque, New Mexico – Snowfall may create hazardous travel conditions in parts of south-central New Mexico beginning late Sunday, as a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect through late Monday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible in southwest Chaves County, particularly along and south of U.S. Highway 82. The watch covers areas including Dunken and Elk.
The Winter Storm Watch is in effect from late Sunday evening through late Monday night, when periods of heavier snow could lead to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility. Forecasters warn that tire traction may be significantly reduced during the heaviest snowfall.
Travel could become very difficult, especially on rural roads and highways across the affected area. Drivers are urged to increase following distances and use extra caution if travel is necessary during the watch period.
The National Weather Service advises residents to closely monitor forecast updates, as snowfall amounts and timing may change. Watches may be upgraded to warnings if confidence increases in the severity of impacts.
For commuters and travelers using U.S. 82, the developing winter weather could disrupt overnight and Monday travel plans across southwest Chaves County.
Additional updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
