Albuquerque, NM – A powerful winter storm is set to impact northern New Mexico, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected through early Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Saturday. Areas impacted include the Northern and Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Chuska Mountains, Far Northwest Highlands, Tusas Mountains, and Jemez Mountains. Snowfall totals could reach 16 to 28 inches above 8,500 feet, with gusts up to 40 mph in higher terrain. The East Slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains could see 3 to 8 inches, with 50 mph wind gusts creating hazardous conditions.

Travel could be dangerous to impossible, with some road closures expected. The Friday morning and evening commutes may be significantly impacted, and power outages are possible due to the weight of wet snow on tree limbs.

Officials urge travelers to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and flashlights. For the latest road conditions, visit nmroads.com or dial 511.
