Santa Fe, NM – A powerful winter storm is sweeping across northern and eastern New Mexico, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. MDT Saturday. Accumulations will range from 4 to 8 inches across much of the affected region, but elevations above 8,500 feet—especially near Raton Pass—could receive 12 to 18 inches of snow.

Travelers across the state should expect slowdowns and possible road closures, particularly along U.S. 64/87, U.S. 54, and I-25. Conditions are also deteriorating on I-40 through Clines Corners and Edgewood due to blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Gusts up to 50 mph are likely across the Central Highlands, Union and Curry Counties, and the Sandia and Manzano Mountains. These winds may bring down branches and create whiteout conditions.

Officials urge drivers to keep extra food, water, and a flashlight in vehicles. For current road conditions, call 511 or visit nmroads.com.

The storm is expected to taper off late Saturday, with clearer conditions forecast by Sunday morning. Residents should delay non-essential travel and prepare for extended disruptions.
