Albuquerque, NM — A winter storm is bringing heavy snowfall to northern New Mexico, with up to 12 inches expected in some areas through Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning covers the Tusas Mountains, including Chama, as well as the northern and southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Snow accumulations between 5 and 10 inches are likely, with peak areas receiving up to a foot of snow.
Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate as snow continues to fall, reducing tire traction and visibility. Authorities urge drivers to increase their following distance and carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.
The storm warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. MST on Thursday. Residents and travelers are advised to check road conditions before heading out by dialing 511 or visiting nmroads.com.
Officials recommend limiting unnecessary travel and preparing for potential delays. Snowfall will gradually taper off late Thursday night, but lingering impacts on roads and mountain passes are expected into Friday.
