Raton, NM – A significant winter storm is set to hit northern New Mexico today, with the National Weather Service warning of heavy snow, dangerous travel, and very low visibility from the northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains to Raton Pass.

According to the NWS Albuquerque office, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from noon Wednesday to 5 a.m. Thursday for the Northern and Eastern Slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Johnson and Bartlett Mesas, including Raton Pass.

Forecasters expect 6 to 12 inches of snow, with up to 15 inches possible near the Colorado border. Lower elevations below 7,500 feet may still see 3 to 6 inches. Snow will begin developing late this morning, becoming widespread through the afternoon, and intensifying this evening.

The heaviest snowfall is expected tonight, when visibility may drop to a quarter mile or less, creating extremely hazardous travel. I-25 over Raton Pass is likely to become snow-packed and slick, with reduced tire traction and slow travel expected through tonight and Thursday’s morning commute.

NWS officials advise drivers to increase following distance, reduce speed, and avoid travel if possible during peak snowfall. Those who must be on the roads should carry extra food, water, and a flashlight in case of emergencies.

Snow is expected to taper early Thursday morning as the storm moves east.
